Total Re-do

In the continuing quest to remake every Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ever made, Hollywood's now remaking Total Recall.

But check out this cast list. The role of Ahnold will be played by Colin Ferrell. Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) will play Ferrell's wife; Jessica Biel (Blade Trinity) his girlfriend. John Cho (Harold & Kumar, Star Trek) plays the rep that talks Ferrell into the implant process. Bryan Cranston (Malcolm In The Middle, Breaking Bad) is the lead villain. Ethan Hawke has a small undisclosed role. And Bill Nighy (Underworld, Love, Actually) is in talks to play Kuato, the revolutionary. The project is being directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld, Mr. Kate Beckinsale) and is in production right now.

I have to say, that's a whole lot of actors that I really like. Though I don't think anyone can replace the awesomeness that is Michael Ironside. Who's up for another Philip K. Dick flick?

Here's the original trailer in case you need a refresher:

Spock > Monkeys

A month and a half ago, we posted the video for Bruno Mars's "The Lazy Song." It featured Bruno Mars and five guys dressed as monkeys all do The Marky Mark,

Today, a new version of the video was released that got rid of Bruno and the monkeys and replaced them with Leonard Nimoy. And can I just say how much I love the child-scaring, porno-mag-reading, middle-finger-giving, beer-drinking, fan-dissing, pot-smoking Spock?

Concert Review: Glee Live! 2011 Tour

Ironically, the night of the season finale of Glee, a night I had fully expected to spend sedately eating cookies in front of the TV, I unexpectedly ended up at Glee Live!, the concert which just kicked off its tour. First off let me explain that I like the show, a lot, but I would never call myself a fan of the intensity of most Gleeks out there. I don't follow their every move or write love notes to the characters. I wasn't even sure going into the show whether it would be a remake of the TV show but Live!, or if it was going to feature the singing talents of the cast in another venue than their acting roles.

Glee Live! is all about Glee the show. It is a towering monument to the fans. So much so that I'm going to forgo using the actors' real names in lieu of their characters', which were carefully preserved throughout the performance. Santana threw out attitude and Britney still had all the best dumb lines. Yes, Artie even stayed in his wheelchair (until he sang "Safety Dance" where he can miraculously walk, just like the dream sequence from the show.) The concert opened with Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and continued through almost all of the show's most popular singing renditions, including Gaga's "Born This Way," Britney's "I'm A Slave 4 U," Beyonce's "Single Ladies," Aretha Franklin, and Queen. The Warblers even made an appearance with their own set of songs. And Brittany and Mike got to showcase their prodigious dancing talents. I was interested to see how the actors fared onstage without the benefit of additional off-screen editing but the cast did very well. There was a quaver here or there (Kurt) but the high energy of the cast made up for any missteps. Mercedes has a HUGE voice; much larger than you can tell from TV. Rachel's voice is just as pure as you imagine. After a well-timed encore, the concert ended fittingly with Queen's "Somebody To Love."

DVD Review: Primal Scream, Screamadelica Live

It's only in retrospect that I realized how big a year in music 1991 was. It was my senior year in college, and I spent much of that year listening to Metallica's Black Album and the newest Skid Row and Great White albums. I remember going to parties where EMF, Jesus Jones, and the DiVinyls were playing, and the big concert draw in town was Garth Brooks. A couple little bands from Seattle released some albums that year you might have heard of, but at the time they didn't hold a candle to Achtung Baby or that crazy Michael Jackson video where everyone’s heads morphed together at the end. The single most important musical event of the year for me was the release of Use Your Illusion I & II, which I stood in line for at midnight to buy. I had no idea that a week later a Scottish band would be putting out a modern masterpiece: Screamadelica.

It was years later that I picked up Screamadelica at a used record store in Tempe, AZ, on a whim. I was by myself and driving up to Sedona to hike for the day, and wanted something new for the ride. It was a leap of faith, really; I'd never heard the band, just heard of them. I was probably halfway there when the first chords of "Movin' On Up" burst from the speakers, and for the next 45 minutes I was utterly mesmerized. The music was at once progressive and timeless, straddling the chasm between rock and club effortlessly. You could just close your eyes and escape into your head with it, although I thankfully chose not to do that on an Arizona highway. I saved that for the hours and hours of listening that followed.

And now, 20 years later, Primal Scream is releasing a new concert video, Screamadelica Live, in which the older but still spry band plays Screamadelic in its entirety (although not in order), as well as a host of other songs.

Um, yes please.

Just A Few Signs You Might Be Old... I Mean A Child Of The '80s

Here's one of the super fun things about getting old: you can reminisce with people even older than you and laugh at the silly kids who have no idea what you're talking about. Never mind it's the kind of laughter that makes you end up crying because you realize you're old.

Some of the things I remember that my kids have NO IDEA what I'm talking about:
  1. Turning the dial on the TV to get different channels.
  2. Recording TV shows on a cassette recorder so I could at least hear the audio of the show when I had to miss it.
  3. Actually using my hand to roll down the window in the car.
  4. Sitting in the back of a station wagon facing backwards. "Hi jerk in the car behind us!"
  5. Being enough of a teacher's pet to be allowed to go to the office and make mimeographs. Mmmm. Loved that smell.
  6. Taking a nap in the van and actually laying down.
  7. Typewriters.

Jazz Up Your Cellphone

At some point in a phone upgrade, I lost a custom ringtone that I'd made to alert me that my mom was calling. It was the cackle and theme for the Wcked Witch of the West. I know, I know, mean. But she thought it was hilarious. Anyway, like I said, I somehow lost it. I've been looking for new ringtones to change it up a little and ran into something via @ThinkGeek's Twitter feed - 8-bit ringtones of '80s theme songs.

CD Review: Amy Heffernan, Friggin Little Know it All

It's pretty crowded at the female pop star pageant lately, with a range of contestants on the runway: emo-girls like Christina Perri, glitter princesses like Ke$ha, and avant pop divas like Gaga have carved out their audiences, and seem poised to crowd out any newcomers.

And then along comes Amy Heffernan, a scrappy little singer-songwriter out of Alberta (by way of L.A.) with her new snarkily titled album Friggin Little Know It All.

I like her.

Most of Heffernan's songs sound like they're meant to be played beneath a sitcom about six urban singles in their late 20s (ok, maybe mid-30s) who are out there living life!, the kind of tunes that would inspire any group of friends to jump into a downtown fountain together or burst into a hipster bar, having the time of their lives as we watch and feel less cool.

That's ok with me. I wouldn't mind being in the sitcom that plays Heffernan's music in the background.

Heffernan seems to be diving head first into Angry Chick Pop: Some of the album's songs have titles like "Ignorant Pig" and "Crap," and are predictably about women who've had it up to here with idiot men. Others are Screw-You bar anthems like "Being Awesome" ("Not checking my hair or fixing my makeup / if I looked any hotter I'd be hooking up with your boyfriend"). Pretty sugary, faux-angry stuff: edgy lyrics, but upbeat melodies, to the point of redundancy. At times, the songs start to sound a little one-note: bitter(ish) music meant to illicit feminine fist pumping in the car at the beginning of a Girl's Night Out.

And yet... I listened to the entire album twice on repeat the other day. I sort of couldn't help myself.

Heffernan's music is undeniably hook-driven and compulsively easy on the ears. Her voice is both supple and gravelly; her attitude both optimistic and a little dirty.

There's a gloss of overproduction to this album, a sense of each song being just a little too prettily assembled, but Heffernan's voice pierces through the extra shininess that too much studio time can sometimes provoke, carrying an attractive grittiness to it. I'm pretty sure that her songs would sound better performed live, in a dive bar at 2 AM. Until she decides to tour in your neck of the woods, though, listening to Friggin Little Know It All on repeat will have to suffice. I say do it.

To find out more about Amy Heffernan, visit her official site, follow her on Twitter, like her on Facebook, or follow her MySpace page.

Be That Girl: Our Interview With Bettie Page Clothing's Tatyana Khomyakova And Jan Glaser

When I heard that Bettie Page Clothing, a line based on the glamorous styles of the 1950s and named after the famous pinup star Bettie Page, was open for interviews I jumped at the chance to speak with them. I have long been a vintage clothing hunter and Bettie Page Clothing produces the best blend of modernized but retro dresses and clothes. Today, I'm talking with the co-founders of Bettie Page Clothing, Russian-born designer Tatyana Khomyakova and her husband and commercial financier Jan Glaser.

How are you today?
TATYANA: Hi, I'm fine. How are you?

Good! So what is it that you love about the 1950s style?
TATYANA: What I like is how feminine all the styles are. They are just like really classy and ladylike. It is really difficult to find styles like that now. As you know everybody is wearing the same short dresses and they don't look very feminine. They look... hmm... let me find the word for that. It's a not very appropriate word, I know, but... slutty.

I'd Like Whatever They're Smoking

Clearly they're smoking the very best stuff in Hollywood because no sober person would have come up with this latest idea.

On deck is a remake of the Jean Claude Van Damme film Bloodsport. Seriously. And Phillip Noyce (Salt, Rabbit Proof Fence) is on board to direct. Bloodsport. Seriously.

Not familiar with the '80s awesomeness of Bloodsport? Just watch this video. It removes all the boring plot and makes it what it should be: an epic fighting montage set to a cheesy song.

I like a good block of Velveeta as much as the next girl but this project needs to die.

The Opposite of UR DOIN IT RAWNG

I don't know what it is about combining the things 'Brooklyn' and 'boys' and 'band', but I usually come out a fan of the result. I caught a Harper Blynn show last month and then utilized my powers of Google-Fu to explore the far reaches of (uh, YouTube?) Cyberia, collecting material on them.

I'm a picky so-and-so where cover songs are concerned. I believe that if you can't do it better than the original (a true rarity) or do it with a different-yet-vicious spin, then don't do it at all. But like this: Don't! Do it! At ALLLLL. Fellow music-hounds, I know you know what I'm talking about.

Here's Harper Blynn doing a pretty terrific take on Beyonce's 'Halo', a song that I formerly found kind of tedious:

Wonder Woman, We Hardly Knew You

You know that Wonder Woman show we've been bagging on for months? Well, this is television pilot pick-up season and it seems that NBC has opted to pass on poor, misguided David E. Kelley's show.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa.

Kind of a shame, really. I'd like to see a good version of Wonder Woman on the screen. With the slew of superhero films being made, nary a one features a kick-ass woman. Yes, I know, there was Elektra awhile back, but it sucked. (Sorry, Jennifer Garner, I still like you.) And don't even get me started on Sucker Punch. Really. Don't. I could go on for hours about how much that film's "female empowerment" angers me.

My hope is that Joss Whedon's Avengers movie does well enough to resurrect his dream of a Wonder Woman film. That's something I'd pay $12 to see.

Dynasty Electric: Golden Arrows, Infectious, Bird Song, And Burning Videos

To close out Dynasty Electric Week, we thought we'd share some of our favorite music videos from the band. Enjoy!

"Golden Arrows" from Golden Arrows

CD Review: Dynasty Electric's Golden Arrows

We originally published this review on March 28th, 2011. I still stand by my proclamation that "Mountain Song" is the best song of 2011 so far. Also, if you want to win one of five autographed copies of Golden Arrows, click here.

Fact: Dynasty Electric's "Mountain Song," from the forthcoming album Golden Arrows, is the best song of 2011.

I know some of you might find that statement ridiculous given the fact that we're not even a quarter way through 2011 yet, but I stand by it. I've intentionally held this review to see if I'd change my mind and it wasn't just the "newness" of the song talking, but I've been listening to it for a month now and my opinion hasn't wavered a bit. Equally haunting and sexy, "Mountain Song" is a song about a love so powerful it doesn't "let life get in the way."

Dynasty Electric is a Brooklyn duo led by Jenny Electrik on vocals and Seth Misterka on everything else. I'm in love with Jenny Electrick's voice. An interesting mix of Alternaqueens Siouxsie Sioux, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, and Debbie Harry, Electrick's voice is what draws you in. I know they're going to get a lot of press for having Ski Beatz produce the album, but oh my God that voice!

Golden Arrows is all over the musical map, effortlessly grooving from genre to genre. The album kicks off with the slinky "Golden Arrows," followed by an industrial "Radiation," and then into a nearly-adult-contemporary "Infectious." Along the way, we're treated to "Bird Song," a happy and playful tune that is juxtaposed with Electrick's sultry delivery, and the Jefferson Airplane psychedelia of "Spell Of Time." You're even get a couple of dance tunes ("Box Of Light" and "Reality Check") before reaching the album's crown jewel, the aforementioned "Mountain Song." In the end, Golden Arrows comes off as an amazing mixtape your best friend lovingly made for you.

Verdict: The moment their record company decides to release the album, pick it up.

Jane's Addiction Live At... Google?

Ain't no money like that sweet corporate money.

All kidding aside, this six-song concert recorded live at the Google I/O 2011 conference is actually quite good. Here's the setlist:
  1. "Stop!"
  2. "Ain’t No Right"
  3. "End To The Lies"
  4. "Just Because"
  5. "Ted, Just Admit It"
  6. "Been Caught Stealing"
  7. "Mountain Song"
  8. "Jane Says"

Dynasty Electric On The Beatles

We've got something exciting for you this week: our very first Celebrity Ranked! As a companion to our Beatles Ranked!, we asked the guys from Dynasty Electric to name their favorite Beatles tunes:

Seth Misterka

My favorite Beatles song is "Tomorrow Never Knows". It is just so heavy and strange, it really stands out in their catalog. I find it very otherworldly, mystical with all the tape effects and backwards guitar, the looping drums, and John's psychedelic lyric and vocal. I love The Beatles, but this track has always been my fave. The other track that really gives me the goosebumps is "Within You Without You."

Jenny Electrik

I really love "Here Comes the Sun." I mean I always have, but a couple of years ago I experienced it on another level. I was listening to the version on the LOVE album. It starts with "The Inner Light" and then morphs into "Here Comes the Sun." I was walking by the waterfront in Williamsburg with my headphones on when I experienced pure bliss: the trees became so alive, the wind blew through my body, and the sun warmed my spirit. Also, I've always really admired George Harrison.

Top 30 Beatles Songs

For this week's Ranked!, we decided to compile a list of our thirty favorite Beatles tunes. Did your favorite make our list? Find out below!

I have a dumbphone, so I'm not privy to this whole Angry Birds craze. But I do have a crush on Nataly Dawn, so watch this:

From The Beatles To Brooklyn: Our Interview With Jenny Electrik

We played Dynasty Electric as our Song Of The Day at the end of February. I've been digging their new album, Golden Arrows, for awhile now. So I was very excited to chat with the group's energetic lead singer, Jenny Electrik.

How are you doing today?
I'm good. I'm up on the rooftop in South Williamsburg (Brooklyn) in the sunshine. I just woke up and it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. How are you?

I'm doing great. First things first, how did you and Seth meet?
At a bar in the East Village. He was waiting for an Internet date and she was late and I was bartending. We just hit it off. We started talking about music and noticed we had a lot of similar interests. He was actually heading to Japan in a few weeks and I was heading to China. He realized I played bass. We were just meeting at the right place and right time.

His date ended up showing up a half hour late. I ended up getting them drunk and he went home with her. I blew him off for a little while. Eventually, I ended up at one of his parties in South Williamsburg at Newsonic Loft.

Review: Final Destination 5 Trailer

Six things I noticed/learned while watching the Final Destination 5 trailer:
  1. It looks just like Final Destination.
  2. It looks just like Final Destination 2.
  3. It looks just like Final Destination 3.
  4. It looks just like The Final Destination.
  5. Apparently, The Final Destination was a lie.
  6. They're no longer calling it Anal Destination. Boo! Hiss!

This Is Much Easier Than Writing A New Album

So Depeche Mode released a new video for "Personal Jesus" yesterday. It's pretty cool, but I'm still wondering why they did it.
