Web Series Review: American Viral

Michael Showalter, the writing and acting superforce behind such classics as The State, Stella, and Wet Hot American Summer, is back with a new web series, American Viral. It's a funny look at a father whose family has tasted some sweet web heat from a viral video of his son getting hit in the balls and his attempts at trying to make lightning strike twice. Here's the first episode, "Epic Balls:"

American Viral is part of Thundershorts, a new comedy video web channel which is also home to Gabe & Max Need Help, Don't Walk, Timeless Seasons, Augie, Alone, Loo Makes It Big, and Teachers Lounge, which stars Ted Alexandro and Hollis James with cameos from Dave Attell, Jim Gaffigan, Janeane Garofolo, and Jim Norton.

Seven Questions In Heaven With Hello Phones

Today we're spending Seven Questions In Heaven with Hello Phones' DonnaFran:

Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
Our music is definitely electronic with a punk No wave edge. We draw on a lot of out influences growing up in New York. We have been called synth-pop, even new wave, but we try to create our own sound and just make music that people will enjoy.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
There are many. Joe (guitar) is heavily into Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. I am into a lot of stuff. My biggest influence as a composer is definitely Ennio Morricone. The rest of the band grew up around a lot of hardcore punk and hip hop, and I was into more dance music. My dad was very into music and got me into a lot of cool stuff when I was young. Lots of Italo-Disco and pop stuff, but a little bit of everything.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
I can't remember because there was always so much music at my house growing up. Something I liked would just find it's way from my fathers collection into my own hands. I still dig through his stuff from time to time and can find something new that I never heard before.

Seven Questions In Heaven With Oh Honey

Today we're spending Seven Questions In Heaven with Oh Honey's Danielle Bouchard and Mitchy Collins.

Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
Danielle and Mitchy: Our songs are upbeat, positive, feel-good, while still remaining super honest. Driving down the highway with the windows open kinda vibes. Folk-pop, if we're gonna give it a genre.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
Danielle: I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac with my parents. I think Stevie Nicks is incredible. I also love female singer/songwriters like Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, Regina Spektor. And my favorite artist of all time is Bon Iver. People with honest, relatable songs.

Mitchy: For me, anyone who can tell a story really. I'm a huge lyric guy, they're everything to me. People like Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Butch Walker, Ray Lamontagne, The Eagles, and I absolutely love The Lumineers.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
Danielle: The first CD I bought was Millennium by the Backstreet Boys. I was 10. They were also my first concert. Someone gave us box seats and I remember Brian swung out over the audience on a wire and he was throwing tiny stuffed bears. I almost passed out.

Mitchy: The first cassette I ever bought... I'm dating myself. Hah. It was Green Day's Dookie. That album changed my life. I was in 4th grade.

Seven Questions In Heaven With The Hawks (Of Holy Rosary)

Today we're spending Seven Questions In Heaven with The Hawks (Of Holy Rosary) singer/guitarist Frank Weysos:

Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
The sound is straightforward. It's fast. And the focus is always on the melody and hook. It's gotta be easy and it's gotta be fun. Live, we're a party band for sure. We all come in singin' and we all come in dancin'. The rest is history.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
The band never decided on a specific style. Whatever happens, happens. But there are certain bands we all love like Weezer and The Pixies, and I think that shows up in the songs.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
When I was eight years old, I bought two tapes at a place called Sound Warehouse. I got Ice Cube's Amerikkka's Most Wanted and Metallica's And Justice For All. I got my swag from Ice Cube for sure but Metallica scared the shit out of me and that intrigued me.

Seattle Symphony Ladies Love Their Sir Mix-A-Lot

Recently the Seattle Symphony did a Sonic Evolution series that chronicles the history of Seattle music. Part of the festivities included two pieces by Sir Mix-A-Lot, backed by the symphony. He invited ladies in the audience up on stage to dance with him and I cannot stop laughing. There's a woman doing a fierce sprinkler on stage in her white cardigan. Happy Monday!

Seven Questions In Heaven With Mat Devine

Today, we're spending Seven Eight Questions In Heaven With Mat Devine from Wrongchilde and Kill Hannah:

Describe Wrongchilde for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
Wrongchilde is my focus right now. After touring for so many years in Kill Hannah, it was nice to take a step back and explore other creative directions. Gold Blooded is an album I've been working on under the radar for a long time... and it's so cool to finally be sharing it.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
My biggest heroes are The Cure, The Smiths, Jane's Addiction, Bowie, Love and Rockets, Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, Catherine Wheel, Ride, Siouxsie Sioux, Red House Painters, Depeche Mode, Slowdive, Trent Reznor...

But I've been obsessed most recently with Fever Ray and Mew.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
Haha "with your own money." Oh I love this question! You NEVER forget the first ones!

The first cassette I ever bought was Billy Idol Whiplash Smile.

The first vinyl I ever bought (from Caldor dept. store in Norwalk CT) was Run-D.M.C. Raising Hell.

The first CD I ever bought was The Cure, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

And the first time I ever actually pulled out a credit card and officially paid for a download of an album in iTunes was last week, and it was for White Sea, In Cold Blood.
