Seven Questions In Heaven With Lunatics On Pogosticks

Today we're spending Seven Questions In Heaven with Lunatics On Pogosticks' Calum Newton:

Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
We're wannabe noise pop but really we're just a PG-rated Dune Rats.

Who are your musical influences and idols?
I'm a massive Sonic Youth fan so they're definitely a huge influence on me and the band. Me and James originally started the band after hearing The Sonics' "Have Love, Will Travel," so they're also a big influence.

What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
I’m pretty sure it was deluxe edition of Pablo Honey by Radiohead. Super great album.

What was the strangest gig you've ever played?
I guess the strangest gig we played was at Newcastle supporting Closure In Moscow. There was about 10 people there when we played and I broke a string and we sounded like death. Some guy gave me a pat on the back after we finished and said, "Chin up son" which sorta highlighted how terrible we played. Bryce and James went to a gay bar next door after we finished and they were doing David Bowie karaoke. This guy was dressed in sparkling silver spandex. It was super rad.

What is your current favorite guilty pleasure?
Listening to Michelle Branch's Spirit Room is always going to be a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It's such a great album but my girlfriend hates it so I've gotta sneakily listen to it on Spotify when she’s not around.

If they named an ice cream flavor after you, what would be the name and why?
Lunar ticks cause it'd be spacey but tick all the right boxes hehe.

Final question: You're the opening act of a music festival. You can get any five artists, living or dead, to perform on the bill with you. Which five do you choose and what song do you all perform as the final jam?
Whoa great question. Um, I'd have to choose Sonic Youth, Radiohead, 7 Seconds, The Descendents, and The Nerves. We'll all play a hella noisy cover of "Shake Some Action" by the Flamin' Groovies.
